EARSHOT – INDIANAPOLIS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA 2016 COMPOSER COMPETITION (June 17)

The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO), Matthew Kraemer, Music Director, and EarShot, the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network, announce the EarShot – Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra Composer Competition to be held on September 22 – 24, 2016 at the Schrott Center for the Arts, Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Competition will provide up to five emerging composers the opportunity to work closely with the ICO to have their music workshopped, rehearsed and read, under the guidance of maestro Kraemer. The experience will include feedback from principal ICO musicians, Maestro Kraemer, and mentor-composers Robert Beaser, Michael Schelle and Melinda Wagner. Participating composers will receive an archival recording of their work and travel and housing. Participants will be selected on a competitive basis from a nationwide call for scores.

Following the proceedings in September, one winning composer and work will be selected to be performed by the ICO as part of the Indiana State University’s 50^th Anniversary Contemporary Music Festival on Thursday, October 27, 2016 in Terre Haute, IN.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or non-citizens lawfully and permanently residing and/or studying fulltime in the U.S.

There are no age restrictions however applicants should be composers at the early stages of their professional careers.

Each composer may submit only one composition for consideration. Composers who have applied previously for an EarShot program are eligible and must submit a new and complete application, including score and all required background information.

Works completed after Dec. 31, 2011 that have not been previously performed or read by a professional orchestra prior to the program date are eligible.

Compositions must be no more than 15 minutes in length, though a selection or movement from a longer work can be considered.

Maximum instrumentation: Strings – 6-4-4-3-2; Winds – 2-2-2-2; Brass – 2-2-1-0; Percussion – Timp + 2 Perc.; Harp; Piano. Woodwind doublings may include: piccolo, English horn, E-flat and bass clarinet.

Works exceeding maximum instrumentation require advance approval for consideration. Compositions may not include soloists, electronics, MIDI, digital technology, and/or sound reinforcement. Incomplete, illegible, or late applications will not be considered. No recordings please.
